Dog Training at The Watering Bowl

Positive, Effective Dog Training in St. Louis

Whether you’re raising a brand-new puppy, working through adolescence, or hoping to improve everyday manners, dog training at The Watering Bowl helps build better behavior, stronger communication, and more confidence — for both you and your dog. Our trainers use positive, reward-based methods to create a safe, supportive learning experience suited for dogs of all ages and skill levels.

As one of the trusted providers of dog training in St. Louis, we focus on real-world skills that make life easier: listening around distractions, polite greetings, loose-leash walking, reliable recall, impulse control, and good manners at home or in public. Training is an essential part of raising a well-adjusted dog, and we’re here to guide you each step of the way.

What Our Training Covers

Our dog training programs are designed around your dog’s individual needs — whether you're looking for puppy training, basic obedience, or help with unwanted behaviors. We take the time to get to know your dog’s personality, motivators, and challenges so we can create a plan that sets them up for success.

Because we use positive reinforcement dog training, your dog learns by making good choices and being rewarded for them. This modern, science-based approach builds confidence, strengthens the human-dog bond, and creates behavior that lasts. No intimidation. No harsh corrections. Just clear communication and consistent practice.

Why Training at The Watering Bowl Works

As a pet resort offering both dog daycare and training, we understand how dogs learn in social environments. Many families in St. Louis choose our training because it pairs naturally with our cage-free community — dogs get mental stimulation, supervised socialization, and structured learning all in one place.

Our experienced St. Louis dog trainers work with you to make sure the skills your dog learns here translate smoothly to your home life. Whether you’re preparing for visitors, hoping for calmer walks, or wanting better manners around other dogs, we help set realistic goals and give you the tools to reinforce progress at home.

What to Expect During Training

When you schedule your first session, your trainer will begin with an evaluation to understand your dog’s temperament, history, and training goals. From there, we tailor each session to focus on the specific behaviors you want to improve — whether that’s listening, leash walking, greeting politely, or reducing over-excitement.

Training takes place in a structured yet friendly environment where your dog can focus, learn, and practice new skills with guidance from our team. Many dogs benefit from combining training with daycare or boarding, giving them additional outlets for energy and socialization.

Meet Our Dog Trainers

Our certified trainers, Laura and Katie, are the heart of The Watering Bowl’s training program. Each one follows the LIMA (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive) approach — meaning your dog learns through positive, humane, science-backed methods. No shortcuts. No heavy-handed techniques. Just thoughtful guidance tailored to every dog.

  • Laura has been training dogs and people for over 10 years and uses several modalities, tailored to each unique pet-parent relationship. She believes that building on existing strengths is key to good behavior and a happier dog. In other words, it’s all about engagement and building a strong foundation that can enhance the rest of your training goals and family life.
  • Katie started out at The Watering Bowl in 2019 as a Daycare Attendant, new to the dog world. After a few years, she became dedicated to learning more about dog behavior and helping others understand their dogs better. She mentored under Laura as her training assistant before becoming CPDT-KA certified.
  • Kristina has over 10 years of dog training experience and more than 15 years in the pet industry, including day camp, grooming, customer service, and training. She completed a Professional Dog Training Program through the Tom Rose School of Dog Training, earned her Certified Professional Dog Trainer, Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA) title, holds a Canine Good Citizen Evaluator Certificate, and maintains Pet First Aid & CPR Certification. Kristina shares life with her dogs Luca (German Shepherd) and Alex (Belgian Malinois).

They’re passionate, patient, and truly invested in helping dogs and their humans communicate better.

New Dog Requirements

We love puppies—but for everyone’s safety, all dogs must be at least 12 weeks old, and any dog over 7 months must be spayed or neutered. Every new dog also completes a 45-minute Sniff Around, our temperament evaluation designed to ensure your pup is comfortable in our cage-free environment and ready to safely socialize with the pack. You can schedule your Sniff Around by giving us a call. To keep our community healthy, we require all dogs to be current on the following vaccinations:

DHLPP
Rabies
Bordetella (required annually, recommended every 6 months)
Negative Fecal Test
Recommended, but not required: Canine Influenza
